"Sandy, what kind of clothes work best?"Because I get this question a lot, I thought this topic deserved a page of its own! So, without further ado...
~ The most important rule of thumb: solid colors only please. Logos, cartoon characters and bright stripes are distracting in a photograph, so try to avoid them if possible.
~~ FOR LITTLE ONES ~~
~ Infants & babies up to 12 months - often just a diaper and a bare belly make for adorable photos! So, prior to the session, please remember to dress your baby in loose clothing (and preferably no socks) to avoid any marks on his/her delicate skin. For very young babies, we will sometimes go diaperless... I'd suggest you bring a change of clothing for yourself - you know, because accidents sometimes happen!
~ For toddlers & big kids - think about the texture of the clothes you're picking out. Soft, fuzzy sweaters, corduroy, and terry cloth all look great in black and white because of their interesting textures. The clothes you pick out for very young children shouldn't be stiff, or complicated. We want everybody to be comfortable, and we want the focus in the pictures to be on the child, not the clothes.
~~ FOR FAMILY PORTRAITS ~~
~ It’s best for you to all wear the same type of clothes and the same colours (like same coloured jeans/khakis and t-shirts, for a casual look).
~ Choose styles that flatter your figure, but are simple, comfortable and reflect your truth.
~If we’re working in studio & with backdrops -
- we've got a choice of 2 photographic backgrounds, either off-white or black.
- if we're using the black backdrop - dark, one-toned, clothing works nicely. Black turtlenecks and jeans, for example, can create a certain mysterious mood.
- if we're using the off-white backdrop - bright colours look nice... I'm thinking everyone in white or denim shirts, jeans or khakis and bare feet for a fun, casual look.
